Rwanda Receives 406 Returnees From Eastern DRC

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Rubavu, August 26, 2026 - Rwanda received 406 Rwandan returnees from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo at the Grande Barrière border crossing in Rubavu District, underscoring the continuing human and security fallout from instability across the border.

The group comprised 125 families, including 33 men, 97 women and 276 children. They were transferred to the Nyarushishi temporary camp in Rusizi District for reception and processing.

Some returnees said they had remained for years in eastern DRC after being misled about security conditions in Rwanda, including by narratives linked to the FDLR.

The returns are relevant to Rwanda's long-running repatriation policy and its security concerns over armed groups, displacement and the political narratives circulating among Rwandan communities in eastern Congo.
