Rwanda: RadioTV10 Journalist Arrested After Assault at Kigali Concert

Kigali, January 1, 2026 The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has confirmed the arrest of journalist Ndahiro Emmanuel, also known as ‘Taikun’, following an incident at a New Year concert organized by the City of Kigali at the Kigali Convention Centre. According to RIB, Ndahiro allegedly assaulted a security guard, causing injury, property damage, and using threatening language. He is currently being held at the RIB Kimihurura Station while investigations continue. Dr. Murangira B. Thierry, spokesperson for RIB, emphasized that under Rwandan law, anyone who intentionally injures or assaults another person may face imprisonment and fines. Penalties vary depending on the severity of the injury: Minor injuries: 6 months to 1 year in prison, with fines between 100,000 and 300,000 Rwf. Serious injuries causing incapacity: 3 to 5 years in prison, with fines between 500,000 and 1,000,000 Rwf. Permanent disability or terminal illness caused: Higher penalties apply. RIB reminded the public to exercise restraint during holidays and celebrations, warning that excessive drinking and reckless behavior can lead to criminal charges and imprisonment. Authorities called for tolerance and adherence to the law to ensure public safety.
