Rwanda Defence Forces Honor Retired Soldiers for Years of Service and Sacrifice

KIGALI, July 11, 2026 - The Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) have honored retired soldiers and officers who completed their military service, recognizing their loyalty, professionalism, and contribution to the country’s security and development.

The recognition ceremony, held on July 10, 2026, at RDF Headquarters in Kimihurura, Gasabo District, marked the 14th event of its kind dedicated to retired military personnel and those who completed their service contracts.

The ceremony was presided over by Defence Minister Juvenal Marizamunda, who represented President Paul Kagame, the Commander-in-Chief of the RDF. It was attended by RDF Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Mubarakh Muganga, senior military officials, officers, and families of the retired soldiers.

In his remarks, Minister Marizamunda praised the retirees for their commitment to national service, highlighting their role in Rwanda’s liberation struggle, the efforts to stop the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and the reconstruction of the country.

He also recognized their contribution to building an RDF that is professional, respected internationally, and capable of participating in peacekeeping missions around the world.

According to the minister, the retirees helped establish a legacy of discipline, cooperation, and service that continues to shape the armed forces today.

Minister Marizamunda also acknowledged the support provided by the wives and families of retired soldiers, noting the sacrifices they made while their spouses carried out military duties.

RDF Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Mubarakh Muganga praised the retired personnel for their patriotism, integrity, and professionalism throughout their careers.

He highlighted their role in mentoring and training younger soldiers, passing on RDF values and helping prepare a new generation of military personnel committed to protecting Rwanda’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Gen. Muganga said the RDF and the country will continue to benefit from the experience, knowledge, and advice of retired officers.

Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Emmanuel Bayingana expressed pride in the progress achieved by the RDF and thanked President Kagame for his leadership in strengthening the military institution.

He said that although they are leaving active military service, retired officers will continue promoting RDF values, including patriotism, integrity, and dedication to national development.

The ceremony concluded with the awarding of certificates to retired soldiers in recognition of their distinguished service and commitment to the Rwanda Defence Forces.
