Renewed Clashes Between AFC/M23 and Wazalendo in Lumbishi and Kashovu
Masisi, March 8, 2026 - Violent clashes erupted on Wednesday, February 25, between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo militias in the villages of Lumbishi and Kashovu, located in the Katoy sector, southern Masisi territory, North Kivu province.
The fighting began early Wednesday as Wazalendo forces launched a counter-offensive aimed at retaking the two villages from rebel control. The exchanges of heavy and light weapon fire were reported across the area, triggering widespread panic among local residents.
The renewed confrontations have caused significant population displacement, with families fleeing the affected villages. Many sought shelter in the surrounding bush, while others moved toward the town of Ngungu in search of safety.
Masisi territory remains one of the most unstable regions in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, frequently affected by clashes between local armed groups and AFC/M23 rebels. Observers note that the security situation remains fluid, with ongoing movements of both government-allied militias and rebel forces contributing to persistent civilian insecurity.
