Police Arrest 63 People in Security Sweep in Beni Amid Ongoing Anti-Crime Operations
Beni, April 19, 2026 - Security forces in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have arrested 63 individuals during a large-scale cordon-and-search operation carried out across several neighborhoods of Beni city. The joint operation, conducted by the Congolese National Police, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and intelligence services, targeted suspected criminal networks operating in urban areas of Bungulu and Beu communes. According to security officials, the operation led to the arrest of 63 people, including four women. Authorities also reported the seizure of military-related items and a significant quantity of cannabis during the searches. The intervention focused primarily on the Trois Cents Maisons and Biautu neighborhoods, areas that have previously been identified by security services as vulnerable to criminal activity. Police stated that all suspects will undergo screening before being transferred to judicial authorities for further legal proceedings, depending on the results of ongoing investigations. Security officials reiterated that public cooperation is essential in combating insecurity, calling on residents to report suspicious behavior to relevant authorities. The operation forms part of a broader series of security measures aimed at restoring order and strengthening civilian protection in Beni and surrounding areas, which have long faced instability linked to armed groups and organized crime. Earlier in the week, security services had already presented around ten suspected criminals to provincial police authorities in Beni. Those individuals were accused of involvement in burglaries and alleged collaboration with armed groups, including the ADF. Authorities say such coordinated operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and reinforce state presence in conflict-affected regions of North Kivu.
