Plaine Savo Camp Population Surpasses 76000 Amid Violence And Ebola Risk
Djugu, August 14, 2026 - The Plaine Savo displacement camp in Ituri's Djugu territory has surpassed 76,000 people, roughly 20% of internally displaced people in the territory, as violence continues to drive civilians from surrounding areas.
The camp population has tripled since December 5, 2025. Between January and June 2026, at least 23 displaced people were killed and around 54 seriously wounded, while a mid-May ceasefire failed to halt insecurity and further displacement.
The humanitarian situation has been compounded by an Ebola outbreak, with 17 confirmed cases reported in the Bundibugyo Fataki zone as of July 27. Movement restrictions have limited access to fields and markets, which had already been closed since the end of March.
Women face increased risks of gender-based violence while trying to reach food, fields and basic services. Humanitarian authorities called for direct intervention, improved conditions at civilian sites, better access to medical and basic services, and additional funding to address the worsening crisis.
