North Kivu: Five Congolese Soldiers Repatriated After UPDF Intervention
Kinshasa, November 25, 2025 - Kasindi-Lubiriha, November 17, 2025. Five Congolese soldiers who had fled the AFC/M23 occupation of Goma were officially handed over to the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) by the Ugandan army (UPDF) on Monday. The repatriation took place in Kasindi-Lubiriha, about 90 km from Beni.
The soldiers had been intercepted in July 2025 on Ugandan territory. According to the UPDF, they were protected under international humanitarian law, did not request asylum, and clearly expressed their intention to return to the DRC.
The handover ceremony, attended by authorities from both countries, was presided over by the military governor of North Kivu, General Évariste Somo Kakulé, who praised the strengthened bilateral cooperation at a time when the eastern region is facing persistent insecurity.
