North Kivu: Deadly Attacks and Cattle Theft in Rutshuru Over Two Weeks

Rutshuru, North Kivu, DRC - January 2, 2026 At least seven people have been killed and four others injured, including two children, in a series of violent incidents attributed to armed groups in Rutshuru territory over the past two weeks, according to local sources. In addition to the human toll, over 100 cows were stolen during this period, highlighting the combined impact of violence and economic losses on local communities. The attacks have been reported in at least seven localities north of the Bwito chiefdom, including the Lusoha-Mirangi road (Kanyabayonga group), Kibirizi-Kibingu road, and Kibirizi-Rwindi road (Mutanda group). According to the program manager of SOCOLUT-DRC (Community Solidarity Against Tribalism in the DRC), the incidents include: Kidnappings: three in Lusogha, three in Kyaghala. Murders and gunshot injuries: in Birundule and along the Kibirizi-Rwindi road. Cattle theft: 80 cows in Kilombo, 25 cows in Byanderema (Mirangi, Mutanda group). Looting: two cases in Lusogha (Friday and Saturday nights), two cases on the Kibirizi-Rwindi road, and one on the Kibirizi-Kibingu road. SOCOLUT-DRC calls for increased protection of civilians, who are routinely targeted during these atrocities, and urges humanitarian partners and peace actors to strengthen security and provide support to victims. The affected areas, Kanyabayonga and Mutanda, are currently hosting over 20,000 displaced families, many of whom are directly impacted by these recent attacks.
