North Kivu Authorities Recommend Cantonment of FARDC and Wazalendo to Reduce Insecurity

Lubero-Butembo, January 10, 2026 - The North Kivu provincial security committee has recommended the cantonment of FARDC soldiers and Wazalendo fighters to demilitarize Lubero commune, reduce tensions, and better protect civilians. The decision was made during a meeting held on Thursday, January 8, in Butembo with representatives from both Lubero commune and Butembo city.

The meeting addressed concerns from local communities regarding a recent surge in crime, including urban banditry, looting, and murders. In Lubero, about twenty cases of criminal activity were recorded within a few days, prompting civil society-led general strikes to pressure authorities into action.

In Butembo, insecurity has also resulted in the murder of two people and the theft of several motorcycles by armed bandits.

The provincial security committee, led by Governor Évariste Kakule Somo, met with local representatives to discuss measures aimed at restoring law and order. Jackson Mumbere, a civil society representative in Lubero commune, emphasized the community’s expectations:“Murders, extortion, and looting have been reported, along with numerous other incidents. We met with the provincial governor, who responded favorably to our requests. We will monitor how the proposed solutions are implemented upon returning to Lubero-Centre.”

Authorities also announced that they would cover funeral expenses for the victim murdered on Wednesday evening in Butembo, signaling immediate steps to address the consequences of escalating insecurity.
