No News of Civilians Abducted in Kateku After Armed Attack

February 16, 2026 - Kateku, Ikobo group, Walikale territory, North Kivu - The five civilians abducted during the armed incursion attributed to AFC/M23 rebels on Thursday, February 13, remain missing. Local sources confirm that no information has emerged about the hostages’ whereabouts or the intentions of their captors. Traditional and administrative authorities report no sign of life from the victims. "So far, we have no news of our compatriots. All efforts undertaken with community leaders and security services have been unsuccessful," stated a local official. Families of the abducted civilians are in deep distress. “We spend our nights without sleep; we don’t even know if they’re still alive,” said a family member. Civil society in Walikale is calling for the swift and unconditional release of the hostages and urges provincial and national authorities to strengthen civilian protection in this volatile area.
