Niger: New Wave of Displacement Hits Téra Amid Rising Insecurity
Téra, November 24, 2025 - The commune of Téra in western Niger is facing a fresh wave of displacement, as residents flee escalating threats from armed groups in the surrounding areas. Already hosting over 50,000 displaced individuals, the town is now struggling to accommodate new arrivals from villages south of the Téra department.
Local sources report that fighters from Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) issued urgent evacuation orders for approximately thirty villages in the Diagourou area, located just ten kilometers from Téra. This region, part of the sensitive “three borders” zone between Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, is increasingly targeted by JNIM and Islamic State in the Sahel (ISIS) attacks.
The forced departures have resulted in a massive influx toward Téra, a strategic military hub housing Defense Zone No. 9. Displaced families are living in precarious conditions: many are sleeping outdoors or on undeveloped land, while others are accommodated by local families who are themselves struggling with limited resources.
While exact figures remain unclear, the humanitarian situation is worsening in one of western Niger’s most fragile regions, raising urgent concerns over shelter, food, and basic services for the newly displaced populations.
