New Clashes Between AFC/M23 and FARDC with Wazalendo Support in Kinyumba
MASISI, February 28, 2026 - Fresh fighting broke out on Saturday, February 28, between AFC/M23 rebels and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), supported by Wazalendo militias, in Kinyumba, Masisi territory, North Kivu.
Kinyumba, located approximately 10 km north of Nyabiondo on the road to Pinga, was reportedly attacked by rebels aiming to regain control from the government coalition. As a result, traffic between Nyabiondo and Pinga has been suspended, and fear is spreading among local residents, many of whom have remained indoors.
Heavy and light weapons fire was reported throughout the combat zone, causing panic in surrounding villages. Displacements toward Nyabiondo have been observed, as civilians seek safety from the ongoing violence.
These clashes occur just 24 hours after a FARDC airstrike in Nyabiondo, which injured three civilians, highlighting the intensifying military operations in the Masisi territory.
