New Ambassador Presents Credentials, Talks Focus on Cooperation and Security

Bamako, April 13, 2026 - Mali took another step in its diplomatic engagement with the European Union as the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, received the EU Ambassador-designate, Alberto Cerezo, for the presentation of copies of his Letters of Credence. The formal ceremony marked the beginning of Ambassador Cerezo’s mission in Bamako, setting the stage for renewed dialogue between Mali and the European bloc. During their meeting, both officials held discussions on the future of Mali-EU relations, emphasizing the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation. Exchanges focused on fostering a pragmatic and constructive political dialogue grounded in mutual respect and aligned interests. Regional security dynamics also featured prominently in the talks. Minister Diop highlighted the evolving geopolitical landscape in the Sahel, particularly in light of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), stressing the need for partners to adapt to these changing realities. He underscored that shared security challenges between Europe and the Sahel region require coordinated responses, given their geographic and strategic proximity. Beyond political and security matters, Mali continues to expand its international partnerships in other sectors.
