Mwenga: AFC/M23 Captures Two Areas, FARDC Repels Them
Kigali, November 27, 2025 - The AFC/M23 coalition, fighting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government, captured the Kitwabaluzi and Kilungutwe areas in Mwenga territory, forcing government troops to flee on foot. The clashes began in the morning of November 24 and intensified throughout the day.
After seizing these areas at 5:00 p.m., DRC forces and their allies, the Wazalendo, retreated toward Cidasa center in Luindi sheriff. Local residents reported that fleeing troops looted shops and property, including goats and motorcycles.
The fighting between AFC/M23 and DRC-Wazalendo forces continues across several parts of North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. On November 23, AFC/M23 had captured Buhimba center in the Gurupoma of Waloa Yungu, Walikale territory, but withdrew on November 24 after a counterattack by DRC and Wazalendo forces, returning to Kasopo.
AFC/M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka announced that DRC government forces are conducting attacks in densely populated areas, using Sukhoi-25 aircraft, combat drones, and long-range artillery.
He said, “Sukhoi-25 fighter jets are returning frequently, accompanied by combat drones and long-range artillery. These attacks by Kinshasa put civilians in grave danger.”
On November 23, AFC/M23 stated it would not tolerate attacks on its positions and civilians, asserting its right to defend itself and protect those at risk.
