Multiple Withdrawals and Renewed Fighting Across Mali Amid Escalating Insecurity

Bamako, April 27, 2026 - The security situation in Mali further deteriorated as multiple withdrawals, territorial changes, and renewed clashes were reported across several regions, alongside fresh incidents in the capital Bamako.

In northern Mali, reports indicated the withdrawal of Malian armed forces and associated foreign personnel from several towns across the Kidal, Gao, and Timbuktu regions. The affected localities reportedly included Adjelhoc and Tessalit in Kidal, Labbezanga, Tessit, and Intahaka in Gao, as well as Ber in Timbuktu.

According to conflicting field accounts, several of these areas subsequently came under the influence of armed groups, including the Azawad Liberation Front and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), although control of certain locations-particularly Labbezanga-remained contested.

In the Ménaka region, heavy clashes were also reported between the Islamic State in the Sahel (ISS) and Malian forces supported by allied partners and local militias. Armed confrontations reportedly reached the vicinity of the regional governor’s headquarters before nightfall, though casualty figures have not yet been confirmed.

Meanwhile, the capital Bamako experienced renewed tension in the evening, with residents reporting multiple loud explosions followed by intense gunfire around 10:30 p.m. Military helicopters and drones were deployed over the city as security forces responded to the incidents and searched for those involved.

The simultaneous incidents across several regions highlight a rapidly evolving and highly unstable security environment, with multiple armed actors active and territorial control remaining contested in several parts of the country.
