MONUSCO Chief Begins Field Visit to Assess Security and Civilian Protection
Beni, April 20, 2026 - The head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), James Swan, has begun a field visit to eastern DRC aimed at assessing the worsening security situation and reinforcing civilian protection efforts. Arriving in Beni on Monday, Mr. Swan launched his first on-the-ground mission since taking office, with planned engagements involving provincial authorities, political representatives, and civil society actors. MONUSCO officials said the visit is intended to gather direct assessments of local security conditions and identify ways to improve the mission’s operational response, particularly in areas affected by recurring violence. The mission’s communications office noted that the itinerary also includes a visit to Beni territory, a region frequently targeted by armed groups, including the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), where attacks on civilians have persisted. Upon arrival, Mr. Swan held discussions with North Kivu Governor General Evariste Somo, focusing on the evolving security challenges in the province and coordination between MONUSCO and local authorities.
