Mbarara Police Arrest Over 15 in Drug Crackdown in Kisenyi Suburb

Mbarara, April 17, 2026 - Police in Mbarara have arrested more than 15 suspects during a targeted operation against drug trafficking in Kisenyi suburb, an area authorities say has increasingly become a hub for criminal activity.

The early morning raid followed intelligence reports identifying houses allegedly used as distribution points for narcotics. Security teams conducted coordinated searches, recovering cannabis and other illicit substances, along with drug-related paraphernalia. The suspects are currently being held at Mbarara Central Police Station pending further investigations.

The operation was led by Kenneth Kabwigo, who said the crackdown forms part of a wider strategy to address rising insecurity in the city.

“We are conducting these operations as a proactive measure to curb the insecurity in the city. The operation is specifically targeting areas raising concerns of attacks and where criminal elements congregate to plan their activities,” Kabwigo said.

Authorities say the raid comes amid growing concerns from residents over increased robberies and nighttime attacks in Mbarara. Local leaders have linked the rise in insecurity to drug abuse and the existence of drug dens, which they allege also function as coordination points for criminal gangs.

Kabwigo warned that the operation is part of a broader city-wide enforcement campaign aimed at dismantling illegal drug networks.

“We want to send a clear message to those engaged in illegal trade and terrorizing residents: Mbarara will not be a safe haven for you,” he said, urging the public to continue providing intelligence to security agencies.

Police say the suspects will be taken to court once investigations are complete, with charges expected to include possession of illegal substances and possible links to organized criminal activity.

Following the operation, security presence in Kisenyi has been reinforced, with increased patrols aimed at preventing the re-emergence of drug networks. Residents have welcomed the crackdown and called for sustained police presence to maintain improved safety in the area.
