Mauritania Condemns Fatal Border Incident Involving Malian Forces

Nouakchott, March 27, 2026 - The government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania has issued a strong condemnation following reported violations against its citizens allegedly involving the Malian military near the shared border with Mali. In an official statement, Mauritanian authorities expressed “profound indignation” and concern over recent security incidents on Malian territory close to the frontier, which resulted in the deaths of several Mauritanian nationals. The government identified the victims as Alassane Mamadou Sow, Mahmoud Abou Sily, Yoro Abou Sow, Hamadou Kandouro Ba, and Mahmoud Kandouro Ba, and extended condolences to their families while affirming national solidarity. Nouakchott called on Malian authorities to halt what it described as violations, open credible investigations, and ensure stronger protection for civilians in border regions. It also stressed the importance of safeguarding Mauritanian citizens and urged heightened vigilance along the frontier areas. While reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peaceful bilateral relations, Mauritania stated that it reserves the right to take all appropriate measures in accordance with international law in response to the incident.
