Ménaka Region - December 29, 2025 & January 2, 2026 ISIS-Sahel IED Attack (Dec 29, 2025): The Islamic State in the Sahel (ISIS-Sahel) claimed responsibility for an improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting a patrol near Intaday. The attack reportedly killed and wounded five Malian soldiers and Russian mercenaries from the African Corps. ISIS-Sahel released images of the targeted vehicle and a Russian mercenary’s helmet, asserting that a helicopter evacuation was observed and emphasizing that the attack directly targeted the Russian presence. Counteroffensive (Jan 2, 2026): On the morning of January 2, 2026, the Malian army, African Corps units, and local militias advanced toward ISIS-controlled areas near the Niger border. Clashes occurred in Tin Tadjallaline, lasting about an hour. After intense fighting, Malian and Russian forces withdrew toward the town, as ISIS maintains control of remote areas where hostages are held. These operations are considered particularly high-risk, highlighting the challenges of securing isolated regions far from main fronts. This sequence of events underscores the persistent threat of ISIS-Sahel in Ménaka, combining IED ambushes, Russian involvement, and ongoing territorial control of remote areas.
