Mali’s Security System in Crisis After Deadly JNIM Attack
Mali, February 11, 2026 - The country faces a collapse of its security system, following a deadly attack by JNIM on January 29, 2026, between Diboli and Kayes. The assault claimed the lives of 15 drivers and 2 soldiers, destroyed four military vehicles and 50 tanker trucks, and left the bodies at the scene for 12 days without proper care.
Authorities only reacted after ten days and the threat of a drivers’ union strike, finally authorizing the burial of the victims. The incident underscores the serious security gaps and the humanitarian consequences of insufficient protection in Mali’s western regions.
