Mali Reports Major Counterterrorism Strikes and Coordinated Nationwide Attacks

Bamako, April 27, 2026 - Mali’s security situation saw a rapid escalation this week, marked by counterterrorism airstrikes and coordinated attacks across multiple cities, prompting strong responses from both national authorities and the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).

On April 22, the General Staff of the Armed Forces announced that surveillance operations in the Koulikoro region led to the detection of a convoy of around 40 motorcycles believed to belong to armed groups moving through the Faya classified forest, south of Zantiguila.

Military aircraft were deployed and conducted targeted strikes against the convoy. According to the army, the operation resulted in the neutralization of more than 70 combatants and the destruction of their equipment. The General Staff stated that follow-up operations were ongoing across the country to track remaining armed elements.

Coordinated nationwide attacks repelled

On April 25, 2026, the Transitional Government reported that multiple coordinated attacks targeted several strategic locations, including Kati, Sévaré, Gao, Kidal, and Bamako.

Authorities said the assaults caused 16 injuries among civilians and military personnel and resulted in limited material damage. The government stated that the attacks were rapidly repelled by the Malian Armed and Security Forces, who neutralized several attackers and restored control in all affected areas.

Officials praised the “promptness and professionalism” of the security forces and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to pursuing those responsible.

The population was urged to remain calm and vigilant, report suspicious activity, and rely on official communication channels.

AES expresses solidarity and condemnation

In a parallel statement, the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as coordinated and premeditated attempts to destabilize Mali and the broader Sahel region.

The AES statement characterized the incidents as part of a wider effort targeting the confederal dynamic and accused hostile actors of seeking to undermine the sovereignty and stability of member states.

The confederation praised the response of the Malian Armed Forces, describing their actions as professional and decisive in repelling the assaults.

It also extended condolences to the families of victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, while reaffirming “total and fraternal solidarity” with the Malian authorities.

The AES further emphasized that such attacks would not weaken the determination of Sahel states to pursue their sovereignty, security, and integration agenda, and expressed gratitude to partners who have shown support in the aftermath of the incidents.

Overall, the events highlight a sharply heightened security environment in Mali, combining sustained counterterrorism operations with large-scale urban and regional attacks, amid growing regional diplomatic and security mobilization.
