Mali Calls for Stronger African Solidarity in Fight Against Terrorism

Bamako, May 14, 2026 - Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdoulaye DIOP, held an informal consultation with the Peace and Security Council of the African Union on Thursday, alongside the ambassadors of Burkina Faso and Niger, to discuss the terrorist attacks of April 25, 2026.

During the meeting, Diop briefed council members on the implications of the attacks, which he said aimed at destabilizing and targeting the leadership of Mali’s transition authorities. He noted that the attackers included members of the FLA operating in association with JNIM.

According to the minister, the attempted attacks were thwarted through the rapid response of the Malian Armed Forces, with support from Burkina Faso and Niger, as well as the resilience and courage demonstrated by Malian civilians.

In his opening remarks and during discussions with council members, Diop emphasized the need for genuine solidarity among African nations, an end to interference in the internal affairs of neighboring states, and the restoration of trust to strengthen regional security cooperation.

He also highlighted ongoing constructive engagements between Mali and Economic Community of West African States aimed at reinforcing regional dialogue and cooperation.
