Major Terrorist Attack Inflicts Heavy Losses on Security Forces in Tillabéri
Niamey, November 29, 2025 - GARBOUGNA, Tillabéri - Wednesday, November 19 - The National Gendarmerie position in Garbougna came under a complex attack by Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS) militants on Wednesday, November 19, marking the most severe security incident of the week.
Preliminary reports indicate 17 soldiers killed, including the mission commander (a captain), 34 seriously wounded, and several reported missing. The attackers also destroyed multiple vehicles and seized significant military equipment before withdrawing.
Security analysts describe the assault as a substantial tactical setback in the Tillabéri region, where previous security gains had been recorded, underscoring the persistent threat posed by organized terrorist networks in Niger’s border areas.
