Maj Gen Joseph Adinkra, Recipient of President Kagame’s Medal for Protecting Civilians, Dies

Kigali, December 10, 2025 - Maj Gen Joseph Narh Adinkra, one of two Ghanaian soldiers awarded the medal of valor by President Paul Kagame in 2022 for their courage in protecting civilians during difficult circumstances, has died of illness. He passed away on December 4, 2025, at the 37 Military Hospital.

Gen. Adinkra served as a Battalion Commander in the Ghanaian Army and was part of the UN peacekeeping force (UNAMIR) in Rwanda during the Genocide against the Tutsi. He was widely respected for his dedication and determination in ensuring the safety of thousands of civilians who had sought refuge under the protection of his troops.

During the genocide, Ghana contributed approximately 850 soldiers to the UNAMIR force. Another notable Ghanaian, Gen Henry Kwami Anyidoho, who served as deputy commander to Gen Romeo Dallaire, was also awarded the medal of valor.

The Indengabaganti, or medal of valor, is a circular medal featuring a five-pointed star at its center, surrounded by a circle with a bow and two arrows. Each element symbolizes critical values:

The five-pointed star reflects the sacrifice made in all directions to protect others.

This prestigious award is presented to individuals or groups who have demonstrated supreme self-sacrifice, risking their lives to save others, even at the cost of their own life.

Gen. Adinkra’s passing marks the loss of a hero whose bravery and humanity left a lasting legacy in Rwanda and the history of UN peacekeeping.
