Mai-Mai Raid On Kyubo Mamba Garrison Kills Eight
Mitwaba, August 2, 2026 - Mai-Mai militia fighters attacked the Kyubo Mamba military cantonment in Haut-Katanga early on August 2, killing eight people, including two soldiers and six military dependents.
The dead included a soldier's wife and five children. Two soldiers suffered gunshot wounds, while four women were burned during the assault, which took place between 05:00 and 08:00 local time.
Kyubo Mamba lies roughly 250 to 300 kilometers north of Lubumbashi, making the raid a significant security incident in a remote area of the province. The attack showed the continuing ability of armed groups to strike military positions and expose civilians attached to garrisons.
Reinforcements were sent from Mitwaba after the raid, and patrols were intensified to reduce the risk of further incursions. The incident adds to concerns over security conditions in mineral-rich southern Congo, where instability can affect transport, local administration and investor confidence.
