M23 Launches Offensive to Retake Katoyi in Masisi
North Kivu, January 2, 2026 - AFC/M23 rebels launched a new offensive early Friday morning to regain control of the town of Katoyi, the main locality of the Katoyi sector, in Masisi territory, North Kivu, according to local sources.
The attack comes after the AFC/M23 lost Katoyi in late December 2025. Multiple sources indicate that the rebels are attempting to recapture the town, targeting four positions held by fighters of the Congolese Patriotic Resistance Group (PARECO), an ally of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).
The fighting is mainly concentrated in the village of Kasheke, within the Nyamaboko 1 group, Osso Banyungu sector, located about seven kilometers from Katoyi’s town center.
However, gunfire was also reported in several surrounding localities, including Busurirwa (Ufamandu 1 group), Myole (Mufunyi Kibabi group, Bahunde chiefdom), and Muhairwa (Kibabi 2 group, Katoyi sector), highlighting the spread of clashes across the area.
On December 29, Wazalendo fighters from the PARECO/Strike Force regained control of Katoyi and neighboring villages-Mitimingi, Kahundu, Kasheke, and Kakoka-following intense fighting. According to military sources, the clashes resulted in several deaths on both sides, as well as the capture of 28 M23 fighters and 12 weapons.
The AFC/M23 had maintained control of the area since mid-November 2025. This latest assault marks the second attempt by the group to retake Katoyi, following an earlier, unsuccessful effort earlier in the week.
