Bamako, April 25, 2026 - The security situation in northern Mali has become increasingly complex following competing statements from armed actors and the Malian Armed Forces regarding developments in Kidal and Gao.

A statement attributed to the Front for the Liberation of Azawad (FLA) announced that its forces had taken control of the city of Kidal early in the morning of April 25. The group claimed that only limited resistance remained in specific areas, including what it described as entrenched positions held by Malian soldiers and foreign personnel.

The FLA further stated that its operations were being conducted in coordination with other armed actors and framed its actions as part of a broader strategy aimed at what it described as territorial “liberation” and the creation of conditions for the return of displaced populations. The group also made political statements calling for international attention and a reassessment of foreign support to Mali’s transitional authorities.

The claims could not be independently verified, and authorities in Bamako have not confirmed any loss of control over Kidal or Gao.

Malian Army maintains control and continues operations

In response, the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGA) issued a statement affirming that military operations are ongoing in Kidal, Kati, and other areas following coordinated attacks earlier in the day.

The army described the incidents as part of a broader attempt to destabilize the country’s defense system and reiterated that such actions would not go unanswered.

Military authorities confirmed that security forces remain fully mobilized, with heightened alert levels nationwide. Measures include reinforced checkpoints, intensified patrols, and curfew enforcement in sensitive areas.

The General Staff emphasized that the Malian Armed Forces remain committed to defending national territory and restoring security, while commending the responsiveness of deployed units and the cooperation of civilian populations.
