By Amina Kabasele3 min readFrançais

Kayes Region - January 3, 2026 The JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims) claimed responsibility for ambushing a convoy of the Malian army and Russian Afrika Korps. The convoy, tasked with escorting tanker trucks, was attacked on the road between Ksarou and Souribougou on Saturday evening, January 3, 2026. As a result of the ambush, several tanker trucks were abandoned. The attackers reportedly distributed the fuel from the trucks to local residents free of charge, signaling a tactical move to gain local support. This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by JNIM in the Kayes region and the vulnerabilities of supply convoys in conflict zones.
