Karamoja Food Insecurity Drives Cash Relief For Vulnerable Households

Moroto, August 3, 2026 - More than 500 vulnerable elders and child-headed families in Karamoja have received cash relief as the semi-arid sub-region continues to face acute food insecurity.

The intervention comes against an estimated 473,000 people in Karamoja experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity. Elderly residents, children and households without stable incomes are among the most exposed, particularly where families have limited capacity to absorb food-price shocks or seasonal shortages.

The cash support is intended to help recipients buy food and meet urgent basic needs. While the number of households reached is limited compared with the scale of need, the assistance highlights the continuing humanitarian pressure in Karamoja, a region where recurrent hunger remains a governance, development and stability concern.

For policymakers and investors, the situation underscores the importance of food security, livelihoods programming and basic-service delivery in Uganda’s northeastern border region. Persistent insecurity over household survival can weigh on local markets, public spending priorities and broader efforts to integrate Karamoja into national development plans.
