Kamuli, Uganda, July 3, 2026 - A 50-year-old man has been arrested in Kamuli District after allegedly attacking his wife with a machete, severing one of her arms during a domestic dispute before reportedly attempting to take his own life by ingesting poison. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 2 in Kadholwe Zone, Kasolwe Parish, Kagumba Sub-county. The victim, a 40-year-old woman, sustained life-threatening injuries after being assaulted while reportedly leaving the couple's home following a domestic disagreement. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly ordered his wife to leave the residence before attacking her with a machete, severing her left hand at the wrist and inflicting additional injuries. The victim raised an alarm, prompting nearby residents to intervene and arrange her transfer for emergency medical treatment. Following the attack, authorities launched a search operation and later found the suspect unconscious after he allegedly consumed poison in an apparent suicide attempt. He was taken to Kamuli General Hospital, where he remains under police guard while receiving treatment. Authorities said the suspect is expected to face attempted murder charges once he is declared medically fit. The case has renewed concerns over the persistence of domestic and gender-based violence in Kamuli District, where authorities say several serious incidents have been recorded in recent years. Investigations into the attack remain ongoing.
