Kampala Police Urge Community Cooperation to Combat Crime and Drug Abuse

Kampala, July 8, 2026 - Police authorities have called on residents across the Kampala Metropolitan area to strengthen cooperation with security agencies in efforts to combat crime and drug abuse, emphasizing that community participation remains essential to maintaining public safety.

During a security engagement with residents and local leaders, Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander ACP Ezekiel Emitu Ebapu said the security situation in the capital remains generally stable despite isolated incidents, including house break-ins, theft, bag snatching, muggings, and land-related disputes.

Authorities noted that land conflicts have become increasingly common, particularly in Kawempe and Wakiso, as rising property values continue to fuel ownership disputes.

Police also expressed concern over the growing involvement of young people in criminal activities, attributing much of the trend to the abuse of illicit drugs. Recent security operations have resulted in the seizure of substances including marijuana and opium, which authorities say contribute to criminal behaviour by impairing judgment.

Residents, parents, and community leaders were encouraged to play a more active role in preventing youth from becoming involved in crime and to report suspected offenders to law enforcement. Police stressed that effective crime prevention depends on timely information from local communities.

The engagement also served as an opportunity for police to assess public security concerns and gather feedback on improving policing services across the metropolitan area.

Authorities further encouraged citizens to participate in the upcoming Local Council One (LC1) elections, stressing the importance of electing responsible local leaders capable of working with communities and security agencies to promote peace, security, and local development.
