Kamikaze Drone Attack on Kisangani Airport Thwarted

Kisangani DR Congo, February 2, 2026 - The civilian Bangboka International Airport in Kisangani, northern Democratic Republic of Congo, was targeted by kamikaze drones overnight between Saturday and Sunday, according to the Tshopo provincial government. Local authorities confirmed that eight enemy drones were intercepted and neutralized before reaching their target. The runway, which is also used by FARDC attack drones and fighter jets conducting strikes against AFC/M23 positions more than 400 kilometers away, was not damaged. In a televised address, provincial officials stated that the drones were “equipped with unconventional munitions and submunitions” and failed to reach their objectives. No group has claimed responsibility, but authorities have accused the AFC/M23 and Rwanda of orchestrating the attack, alleging it was intended to undermine the Washington peace agreement. The provincial government has called for calm and urged residents to resume normal activities, insisting there is “no reason to travel” at this time.
