Joint Verification Team Deploys To Minembwe To Monitor Ceasefire

By Amina Kabasele3 min read

Kigali, August 24, 2026 - A joint verification mission involving the Democratic Republic of Congo government, AFC/M23 and Great Lakes regional states arrived in Minembwe, South Kivu, to monitor implementation of a ceasefire.

The deployment followed continued insecurity in South Kivu, an area where local armed dynamics, identity disputes and regional tensions have repeatedly complicated efforts to stabilize eastern Congo.

For Rwanda, the mission is significant because Minembwe remains tied to cross-border political sensitivities and armed-group disputes that shape Kigali's diplomacy and wider regional security calculations.
