Joint FARDC-UPDF Operations Enable Return of Displaced Persons to Irumu

Irumu, Ituri, January 7, 2026 - Approximately 70% of residents who fled ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) attacks in recent months have returned to their villages along National Route 4, on the Komanda-Luna axis in the Irumu territory of Ituri province. The latest wave of returnees, primarily from Eringeti, Oicha, Beni, and Butembo in North Kivu, arrived on Tuesday, January 6, in Ndalya and Otmaber, in the Walese Vonkutu chiefdom. Local human rights activists credit the improved security situation, resulting from joint operations by the FARDC and the UPDF, for enabling this return. The rehabilitation of National Route 4 and increased military patrols have made movement safer. Christophe Munyanderu, an activist monitoring the situation, said:“People are returning by motorcycle or car. The reopening of the RN4 national highway and the easing of violence are facilitating their return, thanks to strengthened security measures.” The return of displaced populations will allow residents to resume agricultural activities and strengthen their resilience following past crises. Joint security efforts are being praised for their role in stabilizing the area and enabling communities to rebuild their livelihoods.
