JNIM Strengthens Presence in Kayes Amid Mali Fuel Crisis

By Sarah Ndaya3 min readFrançais

Kayes, February 5, 2026 - As Mali faces a fuel crisis, the Malian army is redeploying its forces southward, while JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims) is reportedly strengthening its blockade in the Kayes region. The militants, enjoying considerable freedom of movement, are reportedly imposing their own rules on motorists and collecting alms (“zakat”) in numerous villages. Although the fuel crisis has eased somewhat following the troop redeployment, the increased presence of JNIM in Kayes, a key economic hub, poses a serious long-term security risk.
