JNIM Seizes Militia Post in Mopti, Five Fighters Killed
Mopti, February 4, 2026 - The JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims) claimed responsibility for an attack on a pro-army militia post near Kéngué, in the Mopti region, resulting in 5 fighters killed and the seizure of weapons, including machine guns and hunting rifles.
The attack follows an urgent appeal for help issued by Dozo hunters to the junta in Bamako on February 2, 2026, which reportedly went unanswered. On February 4, JNIM took control of the post, set it on fire, and seized additional weapons and equipment, highlighting ongoing insurgent activity and security failures in central Mali.
