JNIM Seizes Control of Key Roads Between Kayes and Bamako

Bamako, March 5, 2026 - The jihadist group Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) has reportedly established control over major routes connecting Kayes and Bamako, according to a video released by the group on March 5.

The footage shows armed fighters stopping vehicles traveling along the Kayes-Bamako and Nioro-Bamako roads, inspecting passengers and controlling who can continue their journey. Reports indicate that travelers originating from Kayes and Nioro are particularly affected, with some prevented from proceeding.

Local sources suggest that JNIM has maintained a presence and operational control over these routes since September 2025, raising ongoing concerns about security and the safe movement of civilians and goods.

Authorities have not yet provided an official response to the reported road closures and vehicle inspections. The situation underscores the persistent challenges posed by insurgent groups in Mali, especially along strategic transport corridors.
