Timbuktu Region, April 3, 2026 - The security situation in northern Mali remains fragile after the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) claimed responsibility for a roadside improvised explosive device attack targeting a military convoy. According to the group’s statement, the attack took place on Friday, April 3, 2026, south of the village of Gargando in the Timbuktu region. The device reportedly struck a Malian military vehicle. The attack is said to have resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to several others, though no official confirmation from Malian authorities had been released at the time of reporting. The incident adds to ongoing security challenges in northern Mali, where armed groups continue to carry out attacks against military and civilian targets despite continued counterterrorism operations.
