Jamaica Welcomes Rwandan Army Team to Support Disaster Recovery Efforts

Kingston, January 15, 2026 - The Government of Jamaica has officially welcomed a team of Rwandan Army construction personnel deployed to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of infrastructure damaged by the disaster.

The welcoming ceremony took place at the Royal Jamaican Military Academy in Kingston on 15 January 2026, and was presided over by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith.

Senator Johnson Smith expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda, particularly President Paul Kagame and the people of Rwanda, for their support. She noted that the team’s experience would make a significant contribution to Jamaica’s recovery efforts and praised Rwanda’s partnership and brotherhood in responding to the increasing impacts of climate change-related disasters.

Speaking on behalf of the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF), Col. Claudien Bizimungu conveyed Rwanda’s solidarity with the Government and people of Jamaica. He delivered a message from the RDF leadership, emphasizing Rwanda’s commitment to standing with Jamaica throughout its rebuilding and repair process.

Col. Bizimungu also highlighted that the deployment reflects Rwanda’s broader vision in international cooperation and relief efforts, underscoring the RDF’s experience in reconstruction and community-based activities.

The Commander of the RDF Reconstruction Team, Col. Moses Kayigamba, stated that the team will work closely with the Jamaican Armed Forces and other government agencies as part of the cooperation agreement between the two countries. He added that the deployment aligns with President Paul Kagame’s decision to cooperate with the Republic of Jamaica, announced during his visit in April 2022.
