Jamaica Praises Rwandan Forces for Post-Cyclone Relief Efforts
Kingston, March 17, 2026 - The Jamaican Armed Forces have expressed gratitude to the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) for their contribution to recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Melissa.
The storm, which struck in October 2025, killed 45 people and left more than 15 missing, according to humanitarian data. It also damaged 450 schools and over 120,000 homes, affecting more than 626,000 people.
In response, Rwanda deployed 100 military engineers in January 2026 to assist with rebuilding homes and infrastructure in affected areas, including Trelawny and St. James.
In a message shared publicly, the Jamaican military praised the Rwandan troops for their commitment and sacrifice. “We will not forget the work you did during one of the greatest disasters in our recent history,” the statement read.
Officials noted that the presence of the Rwandan forces helped restore hope among affected communities, highlighting the impact of rebuilding efforts on families who had lost their homes.
After completing a two-month mission, the RDF contingent, led by Col Moses Kayigamba, returned to Rwanda on 16 March 2026, where they were received by military leadership in Kigali.
Beyond reconstruction work, the Rwandan team also carried out community service activities, including cleaning and supporting the Blessed Assurance Children’s Home, which cares for children with disabilities.
The mission has been widely seen as a sign of growing cooperation and solidarity between Rwanda and Jamaica in times of crisis.
