Ituri Warns Aid Cuts Could Hit Nearly Two Million Displaced People

Bunia, August 20, 2026 - Ituri's military governor warned that humanitarian funding cuts could strip vital assistance from nearly two million displaced people as conflict, food insecurity, malnutrition and Ebola strain the province.

General Kasongo Mulumba Gaby issued the warning in Bunia during World Humanitarian Day commemorations on August 19. He said the province is hosting nearly two million displaced people after years of violence and repeated shocks to health and food systems.

The warning comes as Ebola has added to the burden since May 15, with national figures cited at more than 5,000 cases and over 2,300 deaths. The crisis is increasing the pressure on overstretched humanitarian supply chains and local authorities.

For investors and policymakers, the funding gap points to persistent operating risk in Ituri, where insecurity and population displacement can disrupt roads, agriculture, mining-linked logistics and public services.
