Ituri: Eight civilians killed in an ambush by CODECO militiamen in Djugu

By Amina Kabasele2 min readFrançais

At least eight people were killed on Wednesday, 7 October 2025, in an ambush by CODECO militiamen in the village of Kalanda, about 30 kilometres north of Bunia, in the territory of Djugu (Ituri). According to witnesses, the victims-farmers from the localities of Chilu, Susudd'ale, and Gobba-were captured, interrogated, and then executed before being mutilated, causing widespread outrage among the population.

While some sources mention a clash between armed groups, civil society rejects this theory and denounces the passivity of the FARDC stationed in Luvangire, accusing them of failing to react in time. It is calling for an urgent investigation to identify the perpetrators and for the bodies to be returned to the bereaved families, while the Congolese army has not yet made any official statement.
