Islamist-Aligned Forces Show Signs of Retrenchment

Khartoum, August 11, 2026 - Islamist-aligned armed and media networks backing the Sudanese army are showing signs of a reduced public profile, amid the mounting cost of the war, Western sanctions and regional pressure to curb the influence of former regime loyalists inside state and military institutions. Estimates put the number of ideological fighters and loyalist mobilization forces on front lines at nearly 20,000, spread across multiple fronts.

Key formations include the Al-Baraa Ibn Malik Battalion, the Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous Battalion, former Popular Security groups and elements linked to the dissolved Popular Defence Forces. These forces have suffered hundreds of dead and wounded since the war began in April 2023, particularly in Khartoum, El Gezira, Sennar and Kordofan.

Their role has extended beyond combat to media operations and online campaigns aimed at mobilizing support for military operations and discrediting civilian political forces. A sustained contraction would matter politically because Islamist-linked networks remain a factor in Sudan's wartime power structure and in regional calculations over any future settlement.

Their apparent recalibration could affect command cohesion, army alliances and the prospects for a post-war civilian transition.
