Intense Fighting in Kibanda as Government Forces Target AFC/M23 Positions
Masisi, March 8, 2026 - MASISI, North Kivu February 25, 2026 - Clashes intensified on Wednesday, February 25, in Kibanda village, located approximately two kilometers from Kasopo in the Nyamaboko 1 group of the Osso Banyungu sector, as government forces and local fighters from Buhimba launched an offensive against AFC/M23 rebel positions that have controlled the area for several months.
The objective of the operation is reportedly to regain control of Kibanda and expel the rebels from this strategic locality. Heavy and light weapons fire has been reported since the morning, with explosions heard in nearby villages, including Kashebere in Walikale territory, spreading fear among civilians.
Residents described a volatile situation and expressed concern over a potential escalation of fighting throughout the day. The renewed hostilities in Kibanda coincide with a broader resurgence of clashes across Masisi territory, including the Osso Banyungu and Katoy sectors and the Bahunde chiefdom, reflecting an offensive strategy on multiple fronts in an area critical for mining operations and supply routes.
The persistent insecurity has prompted many families to abandon their homes, seeking safety in less exposed areas. The resulting population movements are aggravating an already fragile humanitarian situation in the region, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of civilians amid repeated clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and government-allied forces.
