Insurgencies and Cross-Border Crime Test Niger’s Security Gains

Niamey, October 9, 2025 - NIAMEY - Niger’s security landscape remains volatile, defined by ongoing insurgent attacks in the Tillabéri, Tahoua, and Diffa regions, even as the government intensifies military operations to reclaim stability.

President Abdourahamane Tiani’s recent visit to Téra and his meeting with troops of Defense Zone No. 9 underscored the administration’s determination to reinforce state authority in areas long threatened by militant groups. The visit symbolized both a strategic show of presence and a morale boost for soldiers on the front lines of asymmetric warfare.

At the same time, the seizure of narcotics in Gaya highlighted a growing duality in Niger’s security context - evidence of stronger border enforcement, but also a reminder of the increasing sophistication of transnational criminal networks exploiting the country’s geostrategic crossroads between West and North Africa.

Despite operational successes, Niger continues to face the complex interplay of terrorism, smuggling, and organized crime, making sustained security reform and regional cooperation crucial to consolidating its recent gains.
