Bamako, November 23, 2025 - Ibrahim Dembélé, a teacher at the Saadou Ziwaza madrasa, was assassinated on Thursday evening around 6:45 p.m. by unidentified armed assailants near his school in the Dougoukoro neighborhood of Timbuktu.

In response to the killing, the local education authorities have suspended classes across the entire Léré district on Friday, November 21, as security concerns mount.

The attack highlights the ongoing threats to civilians and educators in northern Mali, where insecurity continues to disrupt daily life and access to essential services. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity or motive of the perpetrators.
