Gao Region, April 16, 2026 - Eight employees of international humanitarian organizations were arrested in the Tagado area of Gao by Malian security forces, reportedly in coordination with their Russian partners from the Africa Corps, before being transferred to Bamako. The individuals are said to be affiliated with two humanitarian organizations: the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The circumstances surrounding the arrests have not been fully detailed by authorities. However, the incident occurs in a broader context of heightened security operations in northern Mali, where military and allied forces continue to conduct counterinsurgency activities. Humanitarian organizations operating in conflict-affected areas of the Sahel regularly face complex security conditions while delivering aid to vulnerable populations. No official statement has yet been released regarding the specific reasons for the detentions or the current status of the individuals involved.
