Heavy Fighting Erupts in Uvira as Wazalendo Launch Offensive Against AFC/M23
Uvira, South Kivu - December 22, 2025 - Intense clashes involving heavy and light weapons erupted early Monday across multiple neighborhoods in Uvira, raising fears of a new escalation in South Kivu province.
Local sources reported that gunfire began around 8:20 a.m., affecting areas from Kalundu to Mulongwe, and reaching as far as Kasenga. The Wazalendo militia reportedly launched an offensive targeting positions held by AFC/M23 rebels, signaling a sharp deterioration in security following recent troop movements and protests.
The clashes are not limited to the city. In Fizi territory, additional fighting has been reported in Katuta, the heart of the Makobola area, where armed confrontations continue.
As of midday, official casualty figures remain unavailable, and authorities had yet to issue a formal statement. Residents described widespread panic, with many seeking shelter amid the sustained sound of gunfire. The local population continues to face heightened insecurity, building on the chaos caused by prior clashes, rebel withdrawals, and contested control of urban zones.
The renewed fighting comes amid heightened political and military tensions in eastern DRC, following demonstrations in Goma and Uvira, disputes over AFC/M23 withdrawals, and ongoing humanitarian concerns. Analysts warn that repeated clashes risk destabilizing the region further, undermining both ceasefire efforts and civilian safety.
This situation is ongoing, with further updates expected as additional information emerges.
