Governor Announces Strengthened Security Measures Following AFC/M23 Drone Attacks

Tshopo, February 5, 2026 - Following the AFC/M23 drone attacks last weekend at Bangboka Airport in Kisangani, the Governor of Tshopo, Paulin Lendongolia, issued a circular urging close collaboration with security services. The attacks were publicly claimed by the AFC/M23 rebellion.

Recipients of the circular - including village chiefs, street chiefs, block leaders, concession holders, and owners of hotels and guesthouses - are instructed to report any unknown or suspicious person within their jurisdictions.

The governor emphasized the active involvement of local officials in security operations codenamed "Yeba Voisin" and "Filimbi" (Know thy neighbor; whistle), aiming to strengthen community surveillance and prevent suspicious infiltration.

“No tolerance will be shown for any failure to comply with these instructions. Any official who fails, neglects, or refuses to transmit the required information will be held personally responsible and could be considered an accomplice, with all the consequences provided by law.” - Governor Paulin Lendongolia

Regarding the airport, the provincial governor visited Bangboka Airport, noting that operations are proceeding normally.

The AFC/M23 claimed that it targeted the drone command center at Kisangani Airport, which they assert is used to launch attacks in Walikale, Rutshuru, Lubero, Kalehe, Mwenga, Masisi, and Minembwe. The rebellion also claims to be monitoring Kisangani Airport. Authorities in Kisangani are calling on the population to remain calm.
