Walikale, March 22, 2026 - Heavy fighting broke out early Sunday in the village of Kanune, located in the Ikobo grouping of Walikale territory, North Kivu, as clashes opposed fighters of the AFC/M23 coalition to Wazalendo militias. According to local sources, the confrontation began around 5:00 a.m. when Wazalendo elements launched an offensive on positions held by AFC/M23 forces. Residents reported sustained gunfire involving both heavy and light weapons, forcing civilians to remain confined to their homes amid growing panic. The area of Ikobo has been under AFC/M23 control for nearly a year, following earlier confrontations that saw Wazalendo fighters pushed out of the zone. Since then, the security situation has remained fragile, with recurring tensions and sporadic violence. Recent movements of rebel reinforcements toward nearby areas, particularly Kisimba, are believed to have altered the balance on the ground. Observers suggest that this redeployment may have weakened certain AFC/M23 positions, especially in the western parts of Buleusa, prompting the latest attempt by Wazalendo forces to regain lost territory. As fighting continues, the humanitarian situation remains a major concern. Civilians, already affected by prolonged instability, face increasing risks as clashes intensify in and around populated areas. Local authorities have yet to provide an official update on casualties or displacement, while the situation on the ground remains highly fluid.
